Consider a scenario, wherein, you have stored some important photos related to your recent assignment on a USB drive. You approach your boss in order to show your work. To your shock and dismay, when you connect the USB to a computer, you receive the following error message:
"You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read. To continue with the disk inserted, click Ignore."
The message accompanies three buttons with the following options: Initialize, Ignore and Eject
When you press the Ignore button, nothing happens. The Initialize button takes you to the disk utility option. Even if you verify the disk and repair it, you are still not able to get rid of the above error message.
Cause
The above behavior can be witnessed if you have a corrupt USB. A USB is quite vulnerable to corruption since it is shared with different computers. Moreover, a USB is also not meant for instant removal. Any negligence in removing it from a system can damage its file system.
Resolution
You can observe the following steps to isolate the problem:
- Try accessing the lost photos by connecting your USB to another Mac computer.
- If this strategy doesn't help, you would be required to reformat the corrupt USB in your Mac computer.
Since formatting installs a new file system in a USB, it deletes the previously saved photos. In order to recover lost photos, you must opt for a third-party photo recovery application.
Such tools retrieve formatted photos from a USB by employing sophisticated algorithms. Since they are equipped with simple and graphical user interface, there is no need to acquire any technical skills. But, make sure you download and use a read-only photo recovery utility.
